If you are in the market for a new electric vehicle, your own car may be the answer. How is that possible, you wonder? With the upcoming EV Retrofit Kit. Starting later in 2021, Chevrolet plans to roll out special electric motor conversion kits. These kits can turn the gasoline engine in your car into an electrical, mechanical system instead. They will translate over some of the Chevrolet Bolt EV mechanical features to give your vehicle more power, fuel savings, and a responsive ride.
What to Expect From Chevrolet's Conversion Kits
The kits from Chevrolet are expected to reach markets halfway through 2021. So far, the automaker has tested its kit on the 1977 Chevrolet K5 Blazer, which is one of Chevy's oldest and most iconic SUVs. The K5 Blazer has been successfully retrofitted with the new electric technology. The kits will come with a variety of accessories to provide a smooth transition. They come with an electric motor along with a separate battery pack that provides 60 kWh in power. The kits will also have a wiring harness and production controllers.

While some components will need to be replaced, others can remain intact, including the driveshaft, transfer case, and axles. The electric motor sourced from the Bolt EV can easily be transferred and connected to the powertrain in your current vehicle. The electric motor can hook up seamlessly to the transmission, which means that you can still enjoy a range of gearing with your vehicle even when using electric power.
Additionally, the electric motor can connect easily to the driveshafts, the solid axles, and the drive transfer case. Power will come from the 400V battery pack and the 60 kWh battery to produce about 200 HP. You can use the same battery cooling system, power inverters, and motor controllers in your car, but you may want to get an electronic controller so that you can see how much power is left after each electric charge.
